Marriages are made in heaven – but some come crashing on earth.
The year 2015 has seen many celebrity marriages (Hello, Jennifer Aniston!) – but it has also been a very rough one for breakups.
As the year draws to a close, here’s our roundup of the most heartbreaking celeb splits this year.
1. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner
Bennifer no longer! After a decade of being married, the couple decided to part ways in June when rumours began to emerge that Ben was having an affair with the nanny. The two issued a joint statement requesting their fans and the media to give them privacy.
2. Len Wiseman and Kate Beckinsale
Director Len Wiseman and actress Kate Beckinsale decided to call it quits after 11 years of being married to each other. The couple had first met when they worked on the Underworld films together, of which Wiseman had directed two out of three. Both were married at the time, Kate to actor Michael Sheen with whom she also has a child. A source close to the couple informs us that the two had tried several times to sort out their differences but it simply did not work out for them.
3. Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone
This was one of the cutest young couples in Hollywood and we have to admit that we were rather disappointed. The pair had reportedly parted ways in April, but news of their breakup was only made public in October.
4. Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick
We’ll be honest, we totally expected this one! Ever since this couple began dating in 2006, it has always been up and down for them. Scott has often been accused of cheating, and Kourtney finally walked out on him after she found out that he had hooked up with a former girlfriend during a party in San Franciso.
5. Cristiano Ronaldo and Irina Shayk
Model Irina Shayk split up with football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo after five years together, when rumors began to circulate that Ronaldo was cheating on her. While the rumors where never confirmed, Irina hinted that Cristiano was indeed cheating on her when she responded to an interview question regarding her expectations from a future partner by saying that she wanted him to be faithful.
6. Tiger Woods and Lindsey Vonn
Tiger Woods split from ex-wife Elin Nordegren after he publicly admitted to cheating on her with several women. In 2013, the golfer started dating skiing sensation Lindsey Vonn but even this did not last. The couple admitted they were parting on amicable terms, and that their current working schedules and lifestyles were to blame, not their issues with each other.
7. Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez
Halle Berry had sworn off marriage after two previously unsuccessful marriages, but all that changed when she met Oliver Martinez. The two met on the set of Dark Tide and immediately clicked, tying the knot not long after. But after two years of holy matrimony and a son together, the two have called it quits on October. Rumour has it that the split was due to Olivier’s insecurity over Halle’s success in Hollywood, while he himself struggled.
8. Kaley Cuoco and Ryan Sweeting
Haste makes waste, and there is no better example of this than Kaley Cuoco and Ryan Sweeting. The couple rushed into a marriage after only three months of dating each other, but split after only 21 months together citing “irreconcilable differences”. We have to admit that we were not surprised given the speed with which the two got married, but we do feel bad for Kaley who insisted at the beginning of their relationship that Ryan was “the one” for her.
9. Michelle Rounds and Rosie O’Donnell
After three years of marriage Rosie ODonell and Michelle Rounds announced their separation. This lesbian couple had adopted a daughter together, who is now two years old, and will share custody of her.
10. Chad Kroeger and Avril Lavigne
Avril announced her split with her rockstar husband in September through a picture posted on Instagram. She didn’t state a reason, mentioning only that the two were still very good friends and thanked him for his support. There was much speculation regarding the split, but no official reason was ever offered by either of the two.
